Celebration of a fulfilled life: Dr Olugbenga Kuponiyi
How does one measure a life well spent? That question appears very simple, but puzzling when closely examined.
Is life measured by the actions taken throughout one's lifetime? Or is it measured by the number of challenges a person overcomes in life.
Whatever the case may be, both religion and history agree on one fact, a life well spent is that which leaves a positive mark on the sands of time.
The much loved 46 year old father, husband, brother, uncle and friend Dr Olugbenga Kuponiyi who was born into the family of Late Pa Elijah Oluwatayo Kuponiyi and Mrs Beatrice Kuponiyi on the 28th of October 1970, impacted many people in the course of his life. Little wonder then that hundreds from far and wide stormed Sagamu, Ogun state to pay their last respects and commiserate with his family during his funeral ceremony, amidst cheers and tears. Cheers because his legacy definitely will live after him and tears because even his dearest and closest will no longer be able to benefit from new wise counsel and candid advice from him.
The burial rites commenced with a commendation service at The Covenant Place, Iganmu, Lagos on Tuesday, 16th May.
On Friday 19th May, at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital,Sagamu, a commendation service was also held at the New Auditorium.
It was a very solemn occasion but it livened up a bit when different people took turns to recount their moments with the departed.
Dr B.K Ipaye, Ogun State Commissioner of Health said 'Dr Gb has so much value. This value is what we are celebrating today. Your value is not how much degree you earned, no, but by the number of lives you are able to impact positively. He will forever be remembered'
Prof. E.A Jaiyesimi, Chief Medical Director OOUTH said "He is very infectious. He influenced all students, both christians and non christians positively. He's highly empathic and highly emotional, easily approachable. He was such a good man"
Dr Adefuye, CMAC OOUTH said "Ecclesiastes said there is time for everything. He has used his own time. He was a man of bright mind. If u see him among muslims,he's home. If u see him anywhere, he's home and dry. He fits into everywhere. I feel God loves him more. May God be with his wife and child.
Dr Amoran, HOD CMPC said "Someone asked me why we wanted to celebrate Dr Gb when he wasn't old before he died. I replied him that it's not how far, but how well. He's faithful to God, his wife and the department. I feel he has the certificate to enjoy eternal life. He esteemed the things of the Lord more even than his baby. And this is a lesson to all of us. Dr Gb was a hardworking person. He worked with me and his hardwork reflected in everything he did"
Dr Amoran concluded by asking, 'Is your life sarcastic or saddistic. Is it a comedy or a tragedy.'
The Provost college of medicine OOU, proudly represented by Dr Jagun sympathised with wife and said If he was the one lying in there and Dr Gb was the one talking, he would have sung a song for him. To that effect, Dr Jagun brought out his phone and played one of Dr Gb's favourite songs which stresses on the fact that Jehovah knows about our troubles when we face them. It was indeed heart touching when the audience joined him in singing this song.
The Association of resident doctors, OOUTH, duly represented by Dr Adekolade, a senior registrar in the internal medicine department said "His death came to us as a shock. He is a rare gem and rare breed. He contributed immensly to the growth of ARD OOUTH. He was a motivational speaker and has the ability to multitask. No strand of covetousness was found in him. He has left a vacuum that can't be filled. He was part of the success stories of all medical students who passed through OOU. To my chief Dr Opeyemi Kupoluyi, God will uphold you. I see a much more greater Dr Gb in Opemipo. May you live to fulfil destiny"
Prof Uzochukwu,representing the Public Health Physicians Association of Nigeria also commiserated with the family, OOUTH, the Ogun state chapter of PHPN. "He was an amiable, ever smiling brother. Anywhere you are, always strive to do the best, so that testimonies like this can be heard about you after you are gone"
Words of exhortation were given by Dr Jeminusi who said death is a destiny to all men, and that we start dying right from the day we were born, or even right from the day we were conceived in the womb. And so he said the way we live our life now will determine what will become of us after death.
Friends and relatives all escorted Dr Gb to the Reigning Christ Chapel, OOUTH where a service was held in his honour.
Although it was a sorrowful gathering, there was not much sadness in the air, because the concessus was that the departed lived well, impacted those around him and served God till the very end.
The metamorforces crew(formerly led by Dr Gb) presented a drama which eased off the bits of tension in the air
In addition to these, there were words of exhortation and prayers for the family by Pastor Yemi Osinaike before the service ended.
There was a brief exhortation and prayer before Dr Gb was eventually lowered to mother earth at the Sagamu Anglican Communion Cemetery, Ikenne road, Sagamu
Dr. Gbenga Kuponiyi was a Consultant Public Health Physician. He was also a Teacher, an Actor, a Playwright, a Director, a Producer, a Guardian, a Counsellor, a Motivational speaker and Worship Leader. In fact he became different things to different sorts of people, in a bid to bring out the best in them. Most importantly he was that husband and father anybody would pray to have.
This is such a great loss to the family, to Nigeria and the world at large.
Dr Olugbenga Kuponiyi is survived by Mother, Wife, Son and Siblings.
